Headed to Antarctica to Run the White Continent Marathon and the Punta Arenas Marathon in Chilean Patagonia in late February.......

.....the Antarctica marathon is the grandaddy of all marathon dreams.  I'll be flying into Santiago, Chile and connecting to Punta Arenas which is one of the most southernmost cities in the world.

I'll be flying out on February 23 and arriving the next afternoon in Punta Arenas.  On the 25th, we'll fly to the Chilean research base on Antarctica and run the White Continent Marathon (I'll be running the half-marathon) and flying back to Punta Arenas.

Punta Arenas lists itself as the southernmost city in the world, although Ushuaia, Argentina also makes that claim and does appear to be slightly more to the south.  Minor point to me, I'm flying further south than both of them.  Antarctica is the only continent I haven't visited--this will make me a seven-continent traveler.

The day after the marathon, we'll be taking a trip to Torres Del Paine, Chile's famous national park in Patagonia.  There we'll visit mountains, lakes, waterfalls and a glacier.  Everything I've read describes Patagonia as one of the most beautiful--and most isolated--places on the face of the earth.

On the 27th, we will take a boat to Magdalena Island to visit the Magdalena Penguin Colony.  The island is a dedicated research facility with over 120,000 penguins and should provide some fantastic photos.

After returning to Punta Arenas, the 28th will involve the Punta Arenas Patagonia Marathon so I'll be able to log a half-marathon in Antarctica and South America on this trip.  This promises to be one of those "trips of a lifetime" and  unquestionably will provide a wealth of beautiful photographs.

Must see Ushuaia. The backdrop of mountains is awe-inspiring. It is impossible to dress for the weather. It can change from relatively warm sun to a blizzard in 5 minutes, even in summer. It would be a great place to disappear. The small houses have a well-tended beautiful garden of hardy, colourful plants in tiny plots.
